Sharks Trigger Tweets That Warn Australian Beachgoers of Attacks

Tweeting-shark

In the Jaws movies, an ominous theme song tells viewers when they should expect to see a shark attack. In real life, several hundred sharks in Western Australia have been issuing their own warnings to beachgoers — via Twitter.

Scientists have tagged more than 300 sharks in the area with transmitters, according to Sky News. Each time one of the tagged sharks swims around 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the beach, signals trigger a tweet to automatically publish on Surf Life Saving Western Australia’s Twitter account (@SLSWA).

The project has flagged hundreds of instances of mostly tiger and bronze whaler sharks — but also a few white sharks — approaching Western Australian beaches since June. Tweets describe the time, type of shark and its approximate location. Read more…

Why Social Networks Are Crazy for Private Messaging

Instagram-messaging

Feed-twFeed-fb

Private messaging has captured the attention of the most popular public social networks in the last two months and, surprisingly, this push among tech companies may have a very non-technical driving force.

The feature that adds a little privacy to social platforms that thrive on openness has been a point of emphasis since October for Twitter, Facebook, and most notably Instagram. Other private messaging services like WhatsApp, Kik, and even Snapchat have been busy as well, sending a clear message of their own: Private interactions are necessary, even in a world where public sharing dominates

14 Instagram Photojournalists Who Will Open Your Eyes to the World

Insta1

Feed-twFeed-fb

Instagram has transformed smartphone users into a legion of amateur photographers, handhelds forever at the ready. At its best, the photo-sharing platform captures the transcendental moments of the human experience (the Perseid meteor shower; a sunset over the Manhattan skyline). At its worst, utterly delightful banality (your pancake breakfast).

Critics have condemned “the Instagram effect” as a detriment to the immense care and skill that photography demands. Some argue its easy cropping and preset filters offer an oversimplified view of the craft. But Instagram is continuing to expand, and the pros have adapted to the platform with haste and grace. 1. No More Humblebragging

Can we please make 2014 the year the “humblebrag” dies a much-needed death? While we’re at it, let’s also stop namedropping and giving blatantly insincere pleas for advice that are clearly just made to highlight a glamorous, exotic or exciting “dilemma.” Read more…

The Year in Facebook: Moving Fast, Breaking Less

If there’s one thing Facebook generates, besides selfies and baby pics, it’s lots and lots of press

The company has more than one billion users, one of tech’s most recognizable CEOs (still only 29!), and enormous stores of your personal data. Like it or not, we all seem to have a stake, whether big or small, in what happens at Facebook’s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters. It makes sense, then, that the social network keeps us all, reporters and readers alike, busy week in and week out.

The company has a reputation for changing its product regularly, and this year was no different. Facebook’s 2013 activities ran the gamut from the good (Graph Search), to the bad (Facebook Home), and, of course, the ugly (its misuse of an extremely sensitive image in an ad) Read more…

A small Twitter update is sending a strong message regarding how the company expects users to tweet moving forward

A change to Twitter’s iOS app on Monday automatically surfaces the user’s photo gallery instead of a keyboard when the user begins to compose a tweet. If a user does not want to include a photo, she can tap on the blank text box and the photo gallery will be replaced with the traditional keyboard

This change is now the default for users open a new tweet within the mobile app; users cannot change the default back to a text box at this time, according to a Twitter spokesperson. Read more…
