Twitter Update Makes It Easier to Follow Conversations

Twitter released an update Wednesday that makes it easier to keep up with conversations on the social network.

Now, and Twitter’s mobile apps show conversations in chronological order. Tweets in a conversation are connected using a vertical line.

Up to three tweets in a sequence are shown connected on your home timeline, so you can catch up on a whole conversation at a glance. If three tweets aren’t enough, you can tap on any single tweet to see all of the replies, including any responses from people you don’t currently follow.

Whole conversations can be shared with friends via email from, or as individual tweets from the iPhone and Android apps Read more…

More than 100 social media posts later, Cory Booker will be the Democratic candidate for New Jersey’s open seat in the U.S. Senate. He’ll go against Republican candidate Steve Lonegan in the special election planned for Oct. 16.

Facebook unveiled new U.S. user metrics on Tuesday, announcing that more than 128 million users log into the web version of the site every day. That’s more than 40% of all Americans

On mobile, that number drops slightly to 101 million (nearly 33%) but still demonstrates how popular Facebook’s mobile version is to users

The metrics were released via email with advertisers in mind; a strategy intended to help advertisers better understand their intended audience. Just last month, Facebook beat Wall Street estimates with strong ad revenue totals, amassing $1.6 billion in total ad revenue, including more than $650 million for mobile ads alone Read more…

When a Cold-Hearted Corporation Takes Away Your Virtual Pet

Pet Society was a Facebook game played by hundreds of thousands of people. Users raised pets and interacted with other virtual pet owners. The game launched in 2008, and Electronic Arts shut it down in June, explaining that the company hoped to “reallocate development resources to other titles.”

This happens all the time in the world of online gaming. But this was different. This was taking away people’s (virtual) dogs and cats. Former players have actually protested online.

“My wife has played Pet Society for almost five years,” writes one supporter who signed Save Pet Society’s petition on “Shutting down Pet Society is like someone coming into our house and shooting one of our real cats. But wasn’t that the point of Pet Society, to get you emotionally invested?” Read more…

Watch Videos Go Viral on Twitter

It’s a question as old as YouTube: Why do some Internet videos go viral while others sit and collect virtual dust?

It’s not an easy question to answer — there’s no secret formula for viral video success (unless, of course, you’re Justin Bieber). But that didn’t stop Twitter from exploring the phenomenon in a recent study, examining three viral video examples for signs of consistency

Twitter’s UK research team shared the results in a blog post Monday, and while the secret sauce for “going viral” may still be a mystery, there was some insight to be found. “There are no rules to ‘virality,'” wrote the post’s author, Gordon MacMillan, Twitter UK’s editorial manager. “While some ignite, and spread like wildfire across the web, the growth of others is much more measured, like ripples spreading across a lake.” Read more…

John McCain Live-Tweets Jury Duty

John McCain is no stranger to civil service. As his Twitter followers learned Monday, however, being a war hero and longtime member of Congress doesn’t exempt McCain from jury duty.

Reporting for #juryduty this morning at the Maricopa County Superior Court in #Phoenix – let’s see if I’m picked!

— John McCain (@SenJohnMcCain) August 12, 2013

“Doing my civic duty for a change,” McCain told as he made his way into the courthouse. “We’re off to get those criminals.”

About four hours after that tweet, McCain updated his status: Read more…

Twitter‘s TweetDeck rolled out a handful of new features on Monday, including a new tweet panel designed to enhance the functionality of the application. The new panel, which was highlighted in a post on TweetDeck’s blog, is positioned on the left side of the screen and can remain open while users scroll through their categories on TweetDeck

In addition to the panel, many of TweetDeck’s new features are centered around drafting tweets, not just managing your columns. Most of the new features are already available on Twitter’s mobile applications. TweetDeck’s new features include: Read more…
